BBSA National Scout Constitution 2021

BBSA Aligns Constitutional Amendment to Republican Status Changeover

The Barbados Boy Scouts Association (BBSA) ratified a recently updated version of its constitution at an extraordinary meeting of its National Scout Council (NSC) held on 16th November, 2021. The BBSA’s review of its constitution was spurred by the impending change to Barbados’ governmental status.

As the country moves to a republican form of government, Chief Commissioner Trevor Jones explained that some necessary changes had to be expedited to align with the move. “Our Promise speaks of duty to the Queen, however that will change with our new head of state being a President,” Jones said. “In addition to this, we have taken this opportunity to conduct a preliminary review, involving the entire leadership of the Association. We will be conducting a full review of the constitution in the coming months and I am confident that our changes will speak to a more modern, inclusive Association.”

Dame Sandra Mason has been the Patron of the Association since taking up office in 2018 and Chief Scout, Sir Marston Gibson expressed content at her election to the post of President. “We are an Association fortunate to be patronized by the Head of State’s representative. Now we will be proudly able to state that our patron is indeed Barbados’ Head of State. This is a monumental, defining moment for our country and we are happy to be witness to it. We wish to congratulate Barbados on this next step on our journey as a sovereign nation.”

The NSC meeting, attended by members representing all Sections and Districts of the Association and affiliated organizations, was chaired by the BBSA’s Chief Scout and President, Sir Marston Gibson.

The new constitution is available on the Association’s website from Wednesday, 17 November, 2021.
